At Silence Speaks we provide talks & workshops that integrate professional, academic, & lived experience. Silence Speaks Up Talks & Workshops are facilitated by our in-house counsellor Steven Crichton, Founder of Silence Speaks, covering a range of topics.
We specialise in creating safe space’s where open conversations can take place around areas of mental health that we are passionate about discussing, in order to raise a groups’ empathic understanding, emotional & psychological literacy, & individual levels of self-awareness & self-care around the topics discussed.
Workshops
-
Both. We cover all of South Wales in person, & can host any group of any size remotely through Google Meet, or through your preferred online meeting method (Zoom, Teams, etc).
-
Our talks follow a format similar to that of a presentation followed by a Q&A session with space for conversation.
Workshops, however, create spaces throughout the session for interactions between the facilitator & the group through: activities, group tasks, role play between the facilitator & group, & ongoing encouragement to engage in an open dialogue throughout the workshop.
-
In short, no.
Workshops follow a similar format to a Talk, but with spaces provided for activities, group tasks, role play, etc, between the facilitator & group. The primary reason for this is to provide a more interactive & engaging environment to allow attendee’s to build upon their individual levels of psychological literacy & emotional articulation. If this doesn’t sound right for your attendee’s, then a Talk may be more suitable for a group less open to engaging.
-
This is dependent on the range of topics that you would like to cover, but generally, Workshops are broken down to -
1 Topic - 2 Hours
2 topics - 3.5 Hours
All Topics - 7 Hours

Topics We Cover
-

Stress, Burnout & Your Wellbeing
What is stress? How do we cope with stress in healthy & unhealthy ways? How does stress effect the body & mind? How can I identify stressors & respond effectively to reduce them?
What do we know about burnout? How do we identify signs in ourselves? Or in others? Stages, Signs & Symptoms.
Your wellbeing - Strategies, Coping Techniques & understanding the difference between stress, & distress.
-

Suicide Awareness, Ideation, & Prevention
When it comes to suicide, there are two groups of people. Those who have been affected by suicide, & those who haven’t. Based on my experience, this can be broken down further into those that have considered it themself, & those who haven’t.
Suicide still remains a leading cause of deaths across the UK, & worldwide, defying cultural or societal differences.
Suicide Assistance courses provide guidance on how to respond to those who display signs of suicidality, but what about those who don’t display such signals or warnings signs? Passive suicidality experienced by a perfectly functioning individual?
-

Common Mental Health Conditions & Personality Disorders
Anxiety Disorders
Depression
OCD
ADHD
Understanding signs, symptoms, overlap with similar disorders (PTSD, BPD, etc), & learning how to empathically understand how each condition ‘feels’.
Suitable for those interested in developing a deeper understanding of living with, or supporting someone with any of the conditions covered.
-

Trauma, PTSD, & Complex Trauma
More than 53,000 people died in the Turkey/Syria earthquakes of 2023, with 3.3 million people left homeless following the tragedy. 2 years on, it was found that 41% of adult survivors went on to show signs of PTSD.
Why were 59% adverse to such signs & symptoms? What were the contributing risk factors for those diagnosed? & how does what we can learn from such studies extend to the homes & residents within any community.
If you need support to understand the mechanisms, responses, & development of trauma across the lifespan, then please reach out to take part in a talk that is truly trauma informed.
