Welcome to Silence Speaks Blogs: A Journey into Therapy and Counselling
Before becoming a therapist myself, I sat in the client’s chair many times—throughout my late teens, into my mid-thirties. What many people don’t realize is that therapists are required to attend their own personal therapy multiple times a year. This isn’t just about professional ethics; it’s a crucial safeguard against burnout and vicarious trauma. Therapy doesn’t just benefit the clients—it’s woven into our own well-being toolkit as therapists, helping us strive toward better mental health and a deeper understanding of ourselves.
Each time I stepped into a therapy room as a client, I thought, “This is it. This is how therapy works.” But now, as a practising counsellor, I see that therapy is less about a fixed formula and more about adaptation. While we set boundaries, sign contracts, and establish a framework, the essence of therapy lies in how the client wants it to go. Their needs shape the process, not our assumptions—because they are the experts on their own experience.
At the end of each week, as I reflect on my sessions and catch up on follow-up notes, I find time to consider how my experiences may inspire others. Taking the first step into counselling—making the first phone call, reaching out for the first time—is often the hardest part of a long and transformative journey. My hope is that through sharing insights from my practice, these blogs can offer encouragement and reassurance.
Beyond offering an inside look at therapy, this blog will also explore current trends in mental health and well-being, sharing helpful strategies that readers can apply in their everyday lives. Whether it’s navigating stress, improving relationships, or overcoming personal challenges, these posts will provide insights you can integrate into your own journey toward mental well-being.
So, if you’ve ever considered counselling or therapy but felt anxious about what to expect, these blogs are for you.
If you’re a therapist or counsellor just starting out, wondering what the road ahead holds, these blogs are for you.
And to each of my clients—thank you. Your lived experiences shape my understanding, allowing me to share what I’ve learned to support a wider audience.
Our weekly blog will be available every Friday on the Silence Speaks website and social media channels. Follow along for insights, reflections, and guidance on navigating the world of therapy.
